Bringing Pets to Life Through Art: The Story Behind MJLArt
Hello and welcome to the MJLArt Blog a space where I’ll share stories from the studio, behind-the-scenes looks at my creative process, and tips for choosing the perfect pet portrait or gift.
I’m Matt Lloyd, a UK based artist specialising in custom pet portraits and wildlife art. What began as a simple love for sketching animals soon grew into a full-time passion: creating artwork that celebrates the incredible bond between people and their pets.
Each portrait I create is hand drawn or painted from your favourite photo, using graphite pencil, coloured pencil, or oil paint. My goal is always the same to capture the unique spirit and personality that makes every pet one of a kind. Whether it’s the sparkle in their eyes, the tilt of their head, or the softness of their fur, I want each piece to feel alive.
Why Pet Portraits Matter
A pet portrait isn’t just a picture it’s a lasting memory. I’ve been privileged to create artwork that celebrates birthdays, anniversaries, and heartfelt memorials. Many clients tell me their portrait has become one of their most cherished keepsakes, a way to honour a loyal companion long after they’re gone.
There’s something incredibly rewarding about seeing the joy on someone’s face when they first open their finished piece, it’s moments like those that remind me why I love what I do.
The Creative Process
When you order a portrait, I start by carefully studying your photos. I’ll help you choose the best reference image (you can always email them to info@MJLArt.co.uk). From there, I sketch or paint your pet with attention to every detail, from the texture of their fur to the emotion in their eyes.
Once complete, your artwork is securely packaged, with free UK delivery, and ready to frame or hang proudly in your home.

Alongside custom portraits, I also create original paintings and prints, as well as a growing collection of greeting cards and mugs inspired by my artwork. Each piece is based on my hand-drawn designs, perfect for animal lovers looking for something unique and meaningful or specific dog breeds.
